What is Thrush?
Thrush is a common yeast infection that affects both men and women. It’s usually caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called candida albicans which is normally harmless. Candida albicans are organisms that live on the body. During times when your immune system is compromised, these organisms can develop into an infection. This tends to result in uncontrollable sores, itching, and discomfort on the skin.

What causes Thrush?
Thrush is a common fungus, and like other fungi, it thrives in warm and moist conditions. The thrush germ lives harmlessly on the skin around the penis, but in hot and sweaty conditions, it can multiply and cause a number of different symptoms.

The symptoms of thrush include:

• Genital discomfort
• Itching
• Burning sensation
• Redness
• Swelling
• White discharge with a ‘cottage cheese’ appearance

Thrush is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection however, at times, it can be passed on during sex. The main cause of thrush is due to an overgrowth of the yeast candida albicans. This overgrowth may occur due to recent antibiotic use or general illnesses like diabetes, iron deficiency and immune system disorders.

Treating Thrush?
Thrush in men can usually be treated with ease using an antifungal medicine. Thrush should clear up within a week of treatment. You may need to take treatment for longer if you keep getting thrush.
