What are Period Pains?
Period pain is a normal part of the menstrual cycle and most women will get it at some point in their lives. It's usually felt as painful muscle cramps in the stomach, that can spread to the back and thighs. The pain can sometimes come in intense spasms, whilst at other times it may be dull and more constant.

Period pain occurs when the muscular wall of the womb tightens. When the wall of the womb contracts, it compresses the blood vessels lining your womb. This can temporarily cut off the blood supply and oxygen supply to your womb. The absence of oxygen causes the tissues in your womb to release chemicals that trigger pain.

How long do Period Pains last?
Period pains usually start when your bleeding begins, although some women have pain several days before starting their period. The pain can usually last between 2-3 days however, some may experience it for longer. The pain is usually at its worst when your bleeding is heaviest.

Lifestyle changes that can help ease the pain include:
  • Rest when you need it
  • Avoiding foods with caffeine and salt
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Managing stress
